CSM Group: Doing What Others Can't, As Seen in Construction in Focus

Written by Katrina Reed, CIT, LEED Green Associate | April 14, 2026

We're proud to share that CSM Group has been featured in the April 2026 edition of Construction in Focus, one of North America's leading publications covering the construction industry. The piece, titled "Delivering What Others Can't: Inside CSM Group's Approach to Complex Construction," takes an in-depth look at who we are, how we work, and where we're headed.

Building for the Most Complex Challenges

The feature highlights our growing capacity to take on large-scale, high-barrier-to-entry projects across sectors like biopharma, advanced technology, and entertainment. A centerpiece of the article is the Kalamazoo Event Center, a 453,000-square-foot sports and entertainment complex developed in a joint venture with Barton Malow, which stands as a defining example of what CSM Group is built to deliver.

As CEO Stuart Mason puts it, "There will not be another event center like the one that's being built in downtown Kalamazoo... The level of complexity needed to bring all of those parts and pieces together to create that 100-year kind of vision is a hard thing to do successfully. There are very few organizations and companies that could do that in a safe and sustainable way."

A People-First Model

The article also shines a spotlight on one of our most important differentiators: our approach to workforce development. In an industry facing real labor challenges, we've chosen to think and act differently. That means giving people second chances, putting wraparound support services in place, and working with our trade partners to collectively address systemic barriers to employment. It means asking questions, listening, and making real accommodations that help people succeed.

This people-first philosophy doesn't stop at our own team. Through four Contractor Resource Forums, we've opened doors to partnerships with minority- and veteran-owned small businesses, creating a networking ecosystem that strengthens both our project delivery and our community impact.

Safety, Technology & the Road Ahead

Safety, physical and psychological, is woven into everything we do. So is investment in technology and the advanced controls that today's most complex projects demand. Three years into a five-year strategic plan, those investments are paying off.

We're also expanding our reach. While our roots and commanding presence remain in Southwestern Michigan, we're actively pursuing opportunities in Texas and beyond.
