CSM Group's Preferred Contractor Program: CSM Select™

Southwest Michigan--CSM Group, a construction management firm, believes the quality of the people involved on their construction projects can make a significant difference. That's why the company has launched a major effort to help identify the most qualified trade contractors available, and help others raise their performance to earn that status. As a construction management firm their sole responsibility is to look out for the owner's best interest, which means having talented qualified trade contractors on the project.

“Our Construction Management focus puts us in a unique position to gather considerable evidence as to the quality of the work done by trade contractors. Based on that experience, only the best achieve CSM Select™ status,” said Dave Klok, Compliance Director at CSM Group. “The CSM Select program assures those contractors who achieve high ratings in our thorough evaluation gain a preferred status on our list. CSM Select contractors are the ones to whom we turn first when we solicit bids, and the ones who get our strongest recommendation in “open bid” projects.”

The CSM Select program is viewed as a valuable tool in improving the overall construction process across West Michigan. It is not designed as an elite “club” of those who qualify, but rather an encouragement to raise trade performance on many levels. To this end, CSM Group invests many hours working with various trade firms, helping them understand the program criteria, and develop refinements to their processes to improve their performance.

CSM Select calls for the evaluation of contractors in three primary areas: on-the-job performance, administrative practices, and safety protocols, with specific criteria within each. Every contractor is scored—from one to five—on each of these criteria.

The starting point for CSM Select is only logical: performance on the job site. As Dave Copeland, CFO at CSM Group, puts it, “First of all, the work's got to be done right. If that doesn't happen, nothing else matters. Jobsite safety is also very important, obviously. And thorough, organized administrative practices help keep projects on time and on budget, these are all items we look at.”
