Safety First: CSM Group Adds Defibrillators to Job Sites
Southwest Michigan—CSM Group is leading the way in providing a safe work environment for their contractors' employees, as well as their own. This construction management firm based in Galesburg and Grand Rapids, Michigan, recently purchased 20 Automatic External Defibrillators (AED's) to keep at a convenient, easily accessible location at every company jobsite, ready for immediate use.
According to Steve East, President of CSM Group, "Having AED's at each jobsite isn't something that's mandated by any state or federal safety requirements, such as MIOSHA or OSHA. It's simply the responsible thing to do. As project supervisors, we take seriously all aspects of jobsite safety, and that includes the health and well being of our contractors' employees, as well as our own. It's company policy that safety is the most vital component of our operations. Even our brand contracts with building owners and trade contractors clearly state that we will never compromise jobsite safety. We're the overseers and we're expected to take a leadership role in preventing unsafe conditions at a construction site. This is one more way of doing just that."
Every year, more than 950,000 Americans die from cardiovascular disease. Of those, 250,000 die from sudden cardiac arrest before they reach the hospital. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the lower chambers of the heart (the ventricles) suddenly stop beating normally and develop what is called ventricular fibrillation (VF). This can strike people of all ages and fitness levels, usually without warning. If the condition is not corrected immediately, death can occur within 5 to 10 minutes.
A defibrillator is the only known device/technique that can stop the chaotic electrical heart activity and allow the heart to re-pace itself to a normal rhythm.
East says CSM Group employees have been trained in First Aid and CPR, as well as the risks and management of blood-borne pathogens, and they are now certified to use the company's AEDs. "Certainly our hope is that they will never be needed. But if an emergency occurs, it's reassuring to know that we have these life-saving devices nearby and our people are knowledgeable in their use."
