City of Walker
Location: Walker, Michigan
Project Type: New Construction
Architect: D.T.S. Architects, Inc.
Completion Date: 2000
This project consisted of a complete renovation to the City Hall complex. In order to complete the renovation which included a completely new HVAC system, significant electrical upgrades, new ceilings, floor coverings and wall coverings, departments and staff were moved to temporary locations and then back into their final location after their areas were completed. City operations and public transactions were maintained throughout the process.
The 4,660 square foot Commission Chamber addition incorporated a state of the art audio-visual system. The Chamber interior blended a natural wood and marble council desk with wood historical cases, impressive entry doors and other modest finishes for a warm, rich, yet not extravagant feel.
Other additions included 10,000 square feet of office / common space for City Hall and DPW staff, 8,500 square feet of DPW garage and a 4,250 square foot mezzanine. The main storage area was schematically designed as a basement but value engineering by The CSM Group indicated significant savings by incorporating the storage as a 2nd level mezzanine. The DPW maintenance operations moved into the garage addition while its existing spaces were completely renovated including raising the roof six feet and placing a new concrete floor with a light reflective hardener and underfloor heat. A new bridge crane, exhaust system, brightly painted interior, new lighting and other state of the art equipment greatly enhanced the work environment in this area. Numerous construction phases were established to accommodate the various departmental relocations and renovations and the overall construction duration was 14 months.
