KPS Prairie Ridge Elementary School
The new Kalamazoo Public Schools Prairie Ridge Elementary School is an 85,000 sq. ft., two story structural steel and masonry building with both precast plank and slab on deck elevated slabs. This facility is comprised of five main areas: gymnasium/cafeteria, music and band rooms, administration, media center, and a classroom wing. This school was constructed using economical and sustainable design elements as the primary focus and is the first new school built in Kalamazoo in 35 years.
Prairie Ridge Elementary was designed as a LEED Gold certified facility in accordance with the USGBC. Sustainable aspects include a vegetative roof, high efficient building systems, low VOC materials and a rain garden for storm water runoff absorption. Over 30% of the building products were manufactured from recyclable materials. Other environmentally conscious materials included formaldehyde free wood and low VOC adhesives and paint. The elementary received an Award of Excellence in the Green Building Learning Facilities category.

"We
had five members of the committee interviewing construction managers and
architects — and three of those people had absolutely no previous knowledge of
