Kalamazoo Public Schools
Linden Grove Middle School
The new Kalamazoo Public Schools Linden Grove Middle School is a 143,000 square foot, four level walk-out facility. It was designed with a bridge entry and grade levels on separate floors. Learning commons replace narrow hallways, and a student “mall” offers social interaction as well as impromptu learning space. This school was constructed using economical and sustainable design elements as the primary focus.
The facility serves approximately 720 students and is the district’s fourth middle school. The building enables sixth graders to relocate from the elementary schools into a new setting for educational growth.
A unique feature is a green roof terrace that is used as a teaching classroom. The roof has three Live Roof plantings spanning 4,800 square feet and a retaining live wall. Additionally, the new library creates a contemporary setting and a modern learning environment. It allows students a retreat to study, while enriching their learning experience with new computers and technology.
The intention was to create an integrated learning environment that provides students relevant experiences to emphasize cooperation leading to a sense of ownership. Additionally, teamwork and dedication offered an excellent construction experience to create an innovative school, and an asset to the community.

"Since establishing a relationship with CSM in 2006, Kalamazoo Public Schools has experienced the value from CSM and their "Building Owners' Trust" philosophy. The differences we have experienced have allowed our projects to be successful not just from the financial and scheduling aspects, but also with a feeling of overall team work."
